SPACE OPTICS

Development of new terahertz quasi-optical devices and strategies for new generations of specialised space telescopes and atmospheric monitoring satellites.

FAR-IR ASTRONOMY

Optical receiver design for far-infrared wavelengths for the Herschel Space Observatory (HIFI instrument) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA).

COSMOLOGY

Design and verification of instruments used in projects to observe the cosmic microwave background, including MBI, QUaD, and the Planck Surveyor Satellite.

FLUID DYNAMICS

Experiments to investigate the behaviour of water and aqueous solutions in the vicinity of the density anomaly, which in pure water at 1 atm pressure occurs close to 4 °C.

MOLECULAR PHYSICS

Electron impact ionisation and dissociation of molecules and clusters that are of interest to biophysics (radiation damage), atmospheric physics and other fields.

ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS

Study of the complex interplay of chemistry, dynamics and radiation balance in the upper atmosphere, with particular emphasis on the mesopause (80-100 km).

THz IMAGING

The design and development of terahertz imaging systems and resonant beam combining for non-invasive biomedical imaging.

THz COMPUTING

High performance computing is used for the design and modelling of optics in the terahertz band with applications in astronomy, security, defence and medicine.

ATOMIC PHYSICS

Near-infrared light is used for the interrogation of biological tissue, allowing non-invasive monitoring of biochemical processes.

Post-Graduate Research

Persons wishing to enter post-graduate research must first make contact with a prospective supervisor within the Department of Experimental Physics to agree on a possible research topic and to discuss possible funding options. Contact details can be found by clicking on each of the research links above.

General information about post-graduate studies is provided by the NUI Maynooth Graduate School.

SPUR Undergraduate Scholarships

As part of the NUI Maynooth SPUR Undergraduate Scholarship Programme, the Department of Experimental Physics is offering one SPUR Scholarship every summer for a six week period. More information.
